THE PROMISE

Three Wars. Two Mates.

It was a promise between best friends.

As Sergeant Brett Wood prepared for a third tour of Afghanistan he made his fellow Commando Jamie Zimmermann promise to take care of his wife and personal affairs should the worst unfold. When the call came months later, it tore both men’s worlds apart.

The Promise is the extraordinary story of two mates, Jamie and Brett, each with two families – the family at home, and the brotherhood that bonds military servicemen in times of war. It charts Jamie’s evolution from a bullied boy in the suburbs to a warrior and team leader with the now 2nd Commando Regiment of Australia’s elite Special Forces into combat operations in Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan.

As Jamie and Brett face ever more dangerous missions, the pressures intensify on the home front. Marriages crack, families fracture and the aftershocks of combat fatigue threaten both men’s lives. As Jamie watches all certainty slip away, he commits mind and body to the one thing he can control: he will honour his friend, he will keep his promise.

ABOUT JAMIE ZIMMERMANN:

Jamie Zimmermann was raised in the Hills district north of Sydney. At 18 he joined the Army, became a Commando and was soon conducting reconnaissance operations in East Timor during the Crisis. Sent to Iraq and Afghanistan with Australian Special Forces he came home injured in 2007 and was told he would never run again. After six months in rehab re-learning how to be functional again, Jamie retired from the Army as a Corporal and founded the Australian Hero Games, designing workouts in the name of fallen Australian soldiers, raising awareness and money for charities. Jamie now runs his own property advisory firm, studies at University and is a role model for young men becoming better in life, business and relationships. The Promise is his first book.
